Case Study in a Developed Country: Glasgow, UK

Most of the housing in the CBD is expensive, recently built or converted, high rise flats as there is little open space and land prices are expensive.

Inner City

Tenement houses, e.g. in Govan and Maryhill were built to house factory workers and those working in shipbuilding due to the increase in urbanisation during the industrial revolution. These were:

  • Poorly built
  • Lacking in basic amenities such as hot running water
  • Crowded – many people living in only 1 or 2 rooms
  • Densely packed
  • Polluted from factory smoke
  • Very old housing, many in disrepair
  • Narrow roads unsuitable for modern transport

Redevelopment has been taking place e.g. Gorbals

  • Tenements being knocked down and replaced with more modern housing (initially high rise flats which have now been knocked down too and now more modern 3/4 storey apartments)
  • Renovation of existing housing – knocking two flats into one and installing toilets and running water into flats
  • New towns, e.g. East Kilbride, built outwith the city to house people moved out of the inner city during redevelopment of the area

People started to move towards living in the suburbs in the 20th Century with housing built between the two world wars, post 1945 and then more private housing built here from the 1980s

  • Low density housing
  • More open space
  • Land is cheaper due to its distance from the CBD so larger houses and gardens
  • Area is quieter due to its proximity to the countryside
  • Area is less polluted
  • Less crime
  • Less traffic so safer for children
